Aero - Seven + Fourteen

Time to turn the key on the S14 once more.

Wide-body action returns.

Iishida-san's S14 roills out once more. This time, 9 OFF up front and 14 OFF in the rear.

Yokomo bodies are always on the larger side. Add an Uras widebody and they get wide too. Can't wait to add some more J-Style to this one.

Now when taking some shots it reminded me that I wanted to highlight some aero explanations.

The car companies have you believe that a cosmetic diffusser is the most amazing thing in the world. Which is far from true.

Typically the design on a road car does nothing. But a late model Ferrari can serve a s a good example.

This one will typically just lessen the "Drag" hence the addition of the Uras Drag wing for higher top speed.
In drift, this should relate to a more "slidey" rear end.

The reduction in drag comes from the thinner cross section of air behind the car reducing pressure.

The splitter aids to act on the front and breaks the boundary where the static air hits a moving car. Remember it's not the air moving . It's the car moving through the air which acts more like water, hence the term fluid dynamics.

Bernoulli's principle states that things move faster under less pressure and the drag wing does just that.

For race cars, we consider both down force and drag.... If you've ever read a book on race car CG fluid dynamics you would know that the rear of a normal FD RX7 creates very little down-force, but this particular FD3s is pretty effective at creating significant down-force.

Basically the rear of this car is designed to force as much air upward in the most concentrated area.

The three "wings" work together to create one larger effect. The diffuser in this case helps feed the other wings creating the downforce we know.

The central Rocket Bunny duck tail is removable and without this central vane feeding the upper wing, the downforce and subsequent grip is substantially reduced as the separation between surfaces is too large.

You see D1 machines with and without wings. They definitely change the behaviour. So next time you think you have too much or not enough grip, these are yet another variable in your setting window.

Enjoy...

GCRC Last Tuesday - Part#2 Battle Time

My last big battle night at GCRC was awesome! Fantastic and Spectacular!

Some incredible battles and unbelievable fun.

A huge thanks to Martin Frener for doing the photography tonight. My Yokomo based DRB-REW with Demi Works Rocket Bunny & Tamiya FD3s Rx7 body shell is a formidable battle weapon. De-tuning for proximity was a must.

Battle #1 - Andrew rocks a full Overdose FR-D with an equally fully tuned Rocket Bunny V2 GT86.

Some awesome laps with super close proximity.

The RB Style machines were pretty much in sync.

Battle #2 - Ridwan runs a mix of chassis, so you never know which one is underneath.

Running a little less speed and angle, this one was an easy target, but on the straight, some serious speed really keeps you on your toes. His never give up fun attitude always brings a huge smile to my face!

It's not always one on one... in fact that is always a rare occurrence at GCRC. Two, three and more car constant battles are endless.

This one was Epic.

Battle # 3 - My little pony, Wes was running this RMX with the Ex-Pipes! owned RB-7.

She is a pretty little machine.

There was a lot of "horsing around" with the Bad Bull

Wes and I always run a super aggressive battle, but we enjoy it so much, that even with the agro mode in play, smiles and laughs are still #1 priority.

I think we did about 10 laps with ABSOLUTE ZERO gap one after the other.   Should be some good vids.

It's always awesome running similar machines. Great to back in the Sevens.

Now of course there were many more battles on just one night, but when I run in the "Driftline" it's more a smooth flow, that ultimate intensity.

Battle #4 Dave and I both run our own design chassis. Which is better? You can't really tell. They are different. That's all you can say. The results leave us pretty much an even setup so the flow we can create is pretty damn impressive.

Later on we did a couple of laps where I was calling out the very light contacts I was making.

It went something like this over one lap.

Back fender, back wheel, door, back wheel, rear bumper,  back wheel, back wheel, door, door, door, back fender, back wheel, bumper and so on, and so on.

Amazing.

Dave has an uncanny ability to set the same line, lap after lap whilst the style remains flamboyant.

I'll include this shot again because, the 'Driftline' stable mate is James. It's always fun to "HULK SMASH!"

I really enjoy every one of my battles, trains and one out laps.

GCRC regulars have completed many thousands of laps at this Venue. We have all come such a long way over the last few years and especially the RWD uptake in the last few months has been incredible.

Everyone has their own drift style and it's been a pleasure to see the best extracted to it's fullest.

Just like MAX ONE in Tokyo, these diorama style circuits have a real attraction for me. Time spent at GCRC was a big slice of my free time over the last few years and the people I met are great friends.

Finding another venue that rivals what has been the best in Australia, simply has to be, the best in Australia.

GCRC Last Tuesday - Part#1 The Scene

GCRC Training is just one part of a Tuesday night.

Tonight, I just wanted to have fun, play and make the most of my time.

It's start to hit home, that this venue is really closing.

The 6 moon lineup included some new eyes of death.

Rocking out with opposite and matching machines.

Tonight I captured some I RO HA 168 style video footage to come through the long lens.

Kaine was flying the flag!

In a Japanese Skyline with a Chinese panda at the wheel.

With a monster Turbo on show.!

It was a great night and there is video to come.

But tonight was battle night.   Next post is battle time.

GCRC has been a wonderful venue that has seen regulars and newcomers having fun.

That's what makes GCRC so awesome!
