Yokomo Rubbin's Racin'

Yokomo R-03DT + Gram Lights 57 Gainer.

The look when Yokomo body matches Yokomo Rim and Tyre is very different to other brands. Typically the higher sidewall changes the rolling diameter and a few other things.    These wheels are stock with the Yokomo SD-Sport MR4TC with 86 body as well as other entry level grip machines like the RF concept.

There used to be a SS Super Sport Stock Touring car racing class in Japan running these tyres and a 50:50 Drift Package.

Install 4 of these on your Rear Wheel Drive Drift machine and you no longer have a drifter, you have pure RWD race car.

Counter-steer cars cannot run with these tyres as the wheel speed imbalance is too much, but 50:50 and RWD have no problem turning the drift machine into a race machine.

The gyro gain was up a bit high, but the effect was awesome.

WOW, the DRB Weight Shift REW was amazing. Massive weight shift making it a pretty interesting 2wd touring car. It's been a long time since I'd done any RC racing so my reflexes are way off for accuracy, but I could definitely get into this as a once a month stress out.

A lot of fun.

Now, using these on the front of a RWD drift car was fine. the more grip we can force through the front seems to allow the rear to push against them harder and simply accellerate the car through corners. A fun test.

GCRC Late Night Sliders and Speedline 2.2 review

Photography... Some days we struggle.

shooting in low light well after the sun has disappeared is tough. I did manage one or two shots with a nice focal point.

This ol' soarer is pretty damn cool.

I bagged this shot. 18degree front knuckles give you some decent imagery.

Mark X has had it's lip spoiler trimmed, cool!. I tried a few different rims on the FD tonight  starting with these Kazama items ... but I'll get to that later.

Firstly a few static shots of the Soarer.

Low Yakuza Style.

With gold highlights looking groovy. Speaking of Gold.

Speedline2.2 wheels... I was excited to get these on the car, but actually, once on,  I couldn't wait to take them off.

Tonight we sampled some Speedline 2.2 Wheels and tyres. 22" rims on an RX7? Definitely don't suit mine.

but... these rims may suit the Veilside fortune rx7 from ABC Hobby. That's about the only place I can think of at the moment I'd use these as the Veilside body is so huge it would need silly rims like these.

The rims are very large, you can see that the rears stuff right out to the fender lip on the body. I ran these for a few seconds as the raised lettering on the tyres were scraping on the body. Personally, I'm not a fan of these Oversize looking rims. Kind of a caricature of reality.

It looks like you are running on no tyre which is very unrealistic. Immediately the scale image disappears.

As for the driving experience at GCRC. These tyres are not suitable. Even though these tyres were the hardest available, the compound had too much grip.  Simply too soft for GCRC. They actually had chunks out of the tyre after a few minutes of use.

At GCRC It takes roughly about 35 seconds to lap the circuit in a drift machine. Note : we don't race. But I tried it as a measure tonight.

Within 5 laps, I had lapped my other test car. That means they are about 7 seconds per lap faster than our regular HDPE tyres that suit our circuit. That's 20% faster!!! But what you notice most is the off throttle grip and stopping power.

When you run a drift car, you need to be able to s    l    i    d    e. You need to be able to hold your handbrake but not slow the car to a stop immediately. Off throttle you need the front to slide a little too, not grip and throw the car into a spin. Reality is not like this.

So. Speedline 2.2. If the compounds suit your surface... maybe super low grip asphalt might be better suited. But at GCRC, they simply don't work well. After 10 minute test I was totally exhausted from concentration, trying to keep the car off the fence with no margin for error at all.

Two of us running these tyres crashed more than we were side by side.

I couldn't wait to put my HDPE back on the car and relax.

My tyre testing tonight also showed that I have 2 sets of HDPE RC-Art tyres that behave very differently. Once the tyres become coated with dust and pick up dirt, they get a shiny coating that becomes too slippery (almost no grip) thats bad in the other ways.

So they need some cleansing.  Maintaing the natural plastic of the tyre is important to keep a constant level of slide.

We tried a few things tonight, all fun. But one thing is for sure. The control tyre is very important for fun drifting.

The Martians!

My eyes have been taking a hammering recently, trying to spot black wheels from a distance and see how much angle you are running from miles away is a bit tricky.

The solution is white or super bright wheels! These Top Line, Drift Fighter [Mars] N Models are +9 for the front and +12 for the rear.

They will find a home on the Mazdaspeed speed 210mm FD3s, but for now I have them on the Super GT-D fd and they look awesome poking out!

Mounted on spice carpet tyres with O rings of course.

Swirl O-Rings

This is a great product that I've been using a LOT!

It lets you swap tyres from rim to rim. For carpet this is especially great, because you really only need one or two sets of tyres. They never wear out.

This literally takes only a few seconds to swap rims. The fit is tight so there's no slippage.

They work well on wheels with a large flat section. Wheels with two raised bars are quite difficult. The method is very simple though.

Slip the o-ring over the wheel near the outside. It's best to put a twist in it.

Sit the rim on top,

The push down. Finished.

One minute for a whole set.

Benri Desu Yo! That means EASY!

By the way, wheels featured here are these... 4 Spoke wheels from Street Jam.

Street Jam 37SL +10

Street Jam have just released these 37SL in  +10 offset. Why buy these. Because they are coooL!

they are about 17" instead of the huge sizes available. they look great on AE86 which require that smaller wheel look and also on smaller scale bodies.

They have some great detail also.

I mounted them up ready for a trip to Kazama D-Link tomorrow.

Wheel Selection Imperfection

Here's a little dilemma I have. I have a lot (upwards of 20 sets) of rims and tyres amassed over time.

These T&E Advan RS-D were purchased for this FD Porsche RWB body, But they weren't quite wide enough at +6mm. This Yokomo body is actually quite wide.

So they sit around unused, but still super cool!

So, I went and bought these AWESOME Racing Sparco NT style rims from Street Jam. The ONLY reason I'm not using them is that the centre hub area is too small for the wheel nuts. WTF!!! BE WARNED.

I'll have to machine them somehow.

So they too sit around unused, but still super super cool!

These will not be used on this body.

I recently bought some Panasport rims for another project and they look ok but somehow not quite right. Thank god because I don't need these on my list for this body. These rims are a bit too old school... if that gives you a clue...

So there you have three sets of rims that are unused and taking up space in my box.

Awesome Sparcos +8.5

Panasport G7 +10

and Advan RS-D +6

Maybe oneday they'll turn a tread.

RWB 993 - 99.9% Complete

Here is a sneak peak at the RWB "Speed Hunter" #34 993 Porsche GT-2 Tuned by RE-Xtreme and .RSG.

Today I finished up the lip spoiler and mesh inserts for the front and rear intakes, I installed my new wheels for the FET Rx-7 to test. I'll be running that as my main body for a while. Front is +9 and rear is effectively +18. Both bodies are similar size.

I also did a little finishing to the project. The last Idlers stickers I made for the tyres were easily damaged, so I decided to make this template for the new ones.

New Rings

Easy fitting. These o-rings are great. Slide them on then slide on the tyres. Benri--- that means EASY!

So now my Advan RS-D have tyres and are ready for some dori dori action.

RP-01 Carbon

Ok, My real car has RP-01, so I decided to replicate the future direction.

I'll be painting the real wheels black. So I found these Tamiya re-inforced Carbon RP-01 for 500 yen

I got a set of 45 degree Street Jam rubber to try out. I'll be going for some stretch.

The dummied up result is awesome. Can't wait to try them out tomorrow.

Russ.
